Malisa and Todd had the most incredible destination wedding last week, and I had the honor to be their Tulum wedding photographer for four days in Mexico. It was an amazing time — we photographed everything from zip lines to snorkeling in cenotes to partying at Carnival in Cozumel. I got back three days ago and I’m still recovering.
Tulum is a sleepy little area at the end of the road, about two hours from Cancun. It’s pretty low-key and a really wonderful location for an intimate wedding where you can hang out with your friends and enjoy each other’s company.
We had all sorts of awesome photography excursions — one day we went down into a cenote before the place opened, and had full run of a massive underground cave with a crystal clear river running through it. I brought my underwater housing and some waterproof strobes, and we did a really fun trash the dress photo session.
Also, they managed to find one of the coolest venues I’ve ever been to: the Mil Amores Hotel, way off the beaten path in Tulum. It was the house of the infamous drug lord Pablo Escobar, who was listed by Forbes Magazine as the world’s 7th richest man in 1989. We had a tour and were shown the “yoga room” and I had visions of a dozen of the world’s biggest cocaine kingpins in there doing just about everything but the downward dog. Anyway, if you’re considering getting married in Tulum, Mexico, I can’t recommend this place enough. The staff’s super nice and accommodating and the building and location are jaw-dropping.
Malisa took her wedding planning into her own hands, and I think it shows. She spent considerable amount of time in Tulum before the wedding finding the best vendors, and in the end became quite an awesome wedding planner. She’s even launched her own wedding planner business serving Tulum and everywhere else.
I had so much fun hanging out with Todd and Malisa and getting to know their family and friends. It’s great getting to spend time with everyone and meeting new people. After only a short while, I no longer like “the wedding photographer,” but rather just another guest at a beautiful Tulum wedding.
Be sure to scroll to the very end – you’ll find a slideshow of the whole adventure!
Anyway, Todd, Malisa: CONGRATULATIONS! I wish you guys the very best, and can’t wait to see you again one of these days. If you come to Colorado, you’ve always got a place to stay and rocks to climb 🙂
Nathan, nice meeting you and hanging out. Incredible pictures, can’t wait to see the rest.

Nathan,
I seriously thought you were a long time friend of Todd and Malisa’s. It is equally amazing how personable you are as to your photography skills. You are a king amongst soldiers. Simply astonishing!

dang – these are rad nathan. just spent 10-15 minutes looking through your other site portfolio too, you’ve got some serious talent. 🙂
Love the shots! Beautiful location too.
Your photography talents are amazing! This couple that married in Tulum (I believe it’s Malisa and Todd) are very lucky to have a photographer such as you capture life’s most special moments in a very stylistic and “cinematic” way. Your eye is awesome. I’d like to recommend you to some of our clients who marry in Mexico every year.
Jesse
Stunning pictures, looks like an amazing destination wedding. You did a really good job of capturing the moment!
