Summer is by far my favorite time of year to shoot family photos in Estes Park! I love it when the temps are warm and there’s a nice constant breeze blowing off the snow capped continental divide to cool you down.
I had a bunch of fun shooting this super nice family this summer. They came to town for a reunion of sorts before one of the daughters and her husband made their way abroad.
We spent our late morning strolling around Lily Lake, which is about 10 minutes outside of Estes Park along Highway 7. It’s a great place for family photos because you can just walk around the path surrounding the lake. It’s flat, so it’s great for small kids, and there are a ton of amazing little places with epic views of Twin Sisters and the Continental Divide. One thing I like about it here is that you can escape some of the mega crowds that are drawn toward Bear Lake.
Lily Lake’s trail sports a beautiful aspen grove, lots of tall fields of green grasses and wildflowers, and a beautiful lake beneath Lily Mountain and Twin Sisters. We took advantage of lots of these locations and also made a fun antler photo out of twigs for a Christmas card!
This was an unusual summer because the high peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park held their snow for an awfully long time — much longer than normal. Thankfully that led to a gorgeous mountain backdrop for this family session.

Also check out my pages about weddings and engagements in Rocky Mountain National Park. While you’re not getting married, those pages will give you an idea of the incredible local scenery in Estes Park.
Here are a few faves from the afternoon.
