Casey and Jerry contacted me about their destination wedding in Atlanta, which I’m shooting next summer, but they wanted to do some engagement photos as well. It turned out that they live close enough to drive down to Kentucky, where I am spending part of my fall shooting rock climbing for some of prAna’s fall yoga and climbing images, and they decided to make a weekend trip to meet up.
What a perfect scenario!
We photographed their engagement session at the Natural Bridge State Park, in the heart of the Red River Gorge, which is one of the most incredible climbing venues in America. There are soaring sandstone cliffs and natural arches and bridges all over the place — it’s literally a photography paradise, and with the fall colors in full swing it’s absolutely beautiful.
The Red was in the middle of a huge downpour when they arrived, but we decided to make the most out of it. I love weird weather, actually — it’s far more fun than a typical bluebird day because you wind up with a unique set of images. Casey and Jerry were down to get a little wet, so we went for it. It paid off — mysterious low clouds and a few drizzly raindrops that I could highlight with a flash lent to the photos a cool, serene vibe.
Here are a few favorites from their destination engagement session.
