I spent the winter traveling in New Zealand and Australia, and in March I spent a couple of weeks traveling in the Outback. Our plan was to cross the Simpson Desert, which is one of the most remote areas in the whole country — it’s basically the Sahara, Down Under. Our itinerary was to spend a week driving there, and then cross its 1200 sand dunes before arriving in Birdsville. Birdsville is where angry Aussies tell you to go get lost (as in, “I hope you get stranded in Birdsville for three weeks” which I guess actually happens to people with astonishing frequency).
Our adventure nearly turned epic when we almost bogged our truck in a mud pit in the middle of nowhere, but we thankfully made it out and I had a story to tell and a lot of pictures to show from it. The trip was quite incredible, and it brought new meaning to the term desolate. Once-in-a-generation storms had drenched the region, too, so it was almost glowing with grasses and wildflowers.
Anyway, Reach Magazine took on the story and even used one of my shots as their subscription card.
