Ambergris Caye, Belize wedding photographer

The little island of Ambergris Caye is a small slice of paradise, and will certainly appeal to adventurous brides and grooms who love tiny islands, intimate beach weddings, and who are looking for great activities for their guests. I’ve photographed Ambergris Caye weddings and absolutely love this place. And apparently I’m not the only one — in 2008, Islands Magazine named it as one of the top islands to live on in the world.

It’s pretty easy to organize a celebration on Ambergris Caye if you can get everything together in advance. If you want to legally marry there, the requirements are as follows: first, find a registered officiant through the Registry Department. You and your spouse must have arrived 72 hours before applying for a license, which you can get at the Attorney General’s office in Belmopan, or at the General Registry at the Supreme Court in Belize City. You probably don’t want to have to stick around the big cities for three days, but if you go on a dive vacation or visit the ruins, you can return to Belize City first before taking a boat or plane out to Ambergris. You’ll need your passport and $100 — and be aware that it can take a week to process. Otherwise, it’s pretty easy to just have a civil ceremony at home and a wedding in Belize, which is what a lot of people do.

You should know that the hotel district on Ambergris generally faces east — so you get the sun rising over the water and setting on the west side of the island. Solutions if you want a beautifully lit ceremony? Get married at sunrise (no kidding!), hire out a private section of beach or vacation rental on the west side, or get married on a boat. Or just live it up — the sky turns beautiful colors at sunset in San Pedro Town.

What to do in Ambergris Caye, Belize

Ambergris has lots of great activities, the top one being snorkeling and scuba diving. The reef off the island is a world class barrier reef and home to an absolute ton of marine life. The last wedding I shot there, the bride and groom hired a glass bottom boat and took their guests on a snorkeling excursion. One of the craziest photos from the entire weekend was one I shot of the bride’s mom having her fin bit off by a moray eel. You can also dive on the outside of the barrier reef, or take a speed boat to the world famous blue hole off the coast, which the entire wedding party did.

Dreamtime Verdict: Ambergris Caye, Belize

As a wedding photographer, I give Ambergris Caye, Belize 5 of 5 stars. I can’t think of any better place for couples who love a good adventure. Ambergris is not the easiest place to get to, which means it’s really exciting, off the beaten path, and really really beautiful. Taking boat taxis from your hotel to the pier in San Pedro Town for your wedding reception or rehearsal dinner will probably be one of the most memorable parts of the wedding.
