A sunset elopement in Rocky Mountain National Park

An elopement at golden hour on the shores of Lily Lake

Here are some photos from Erik and Martina’s gorgeous elopement photos at Lily Lake, just outside of Estes Park. This came on the heels of their engagement session, which we did just beforehand.

They have a great story involving long distance dating and lots of Skype calls between Colorado and Germany, and are planning a wedding in Denver next summer, which I’m absolutely thrilled to be shooting.

As we shot their session on the shores of Lily Lake, the sun just got more and more beautiful. What I like best about shooting here is the angle of the light in the late afternoon. In many places in Estes Park, the Rockies cast long shadows across valley floors, but at Lily Lake the sun sets pretty far away and there aren’t big peaks obscuring the area to darken it.

Basically that means you get extended golden hour and lots of beautiful light to play with during engagement sessions and afternoon weddings.

I live about 5 minutes from this place and it’s amazing how the area changes through the year. In the winter months, the lake is totally frozen and you can ice skate on it, but in the summers it’s downright hot.

Ahh, Colorado, I love you so.

Martina and Erik, congrats! Excited to see you next year 🙂

Lily Lake is pretty special — there are amazing views up to Twin Sisters and Lily Mountain towering above, and on the shore of the lake are gorgeous fields of flowers, amazing reflections, and cool fallen trees like this one.
